Subho Durga Puja is one of the major and grand festivals of Hinduism, observed every year in the month of Ashwin, that is, September-October. This festival embodies the victory of good over evil and celebrates the power, courage, and glory of motherhood of the goddess Goddess Durga through the worship of the goddess Goddess Durga. Durga Puja is seen to be for 10 days, but of which the last five are of prime importance. These days, people worship Goddess Durga with family and friends, receive their blessings, and share happiness between them.
Suho Durga Puja 2024 is going to start from October 8, and it will continue till October 13. In this, each day has its own specific significance; the major days of which are Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami. Shashthi is said to be the day Goddess Durga lands on earth while Vijayadashami (Dashami) is celebrated as the day of her victory over Mahishasura. It is, in turn, known as ‘Vijayadashami’ or ‘Dussehra’, that is, day of victory of good over evil.
Subh Durga Puja begins with Mahalaya which marks the end of Pitru Paksha and the commencement of Devi Paksha. The sound of Goddess Durga’s arrival on Mahalaya day resonates and gives the message of the beginning of the festival. On the day of Shashthi, the goddess Durga is worshipped, which is known as ‘Kalparambha’ and ‘Bodhan’. There, worshiping Goddess Durga and calling her to the earth. At this time, the whole atmosphere becomes religious and auspicious.
The very special event of this festival is Kumari Puja, in which girls are worshiped as Goddess Durga. This is very prevalent in West Bengal. Another important ritual of Durga Puja is Sindoor Khela, in which women offer vermilion at the feet of Goddess Durga and apply vermilion to each other. This custom symbolises marital happiness and prosperity.
Subho Durga Puja has now become an event with greater cultural connotations. Pandal-hopping, i.e. to visit various pandals and witness the worship of Goddess Durga, is the latest craze among today’s youth. The gigantic idols of Goddess Durga, which is artistically made in every pandal, is a wonder to behold for the visitors. Every year there is something new and attractive to see in these pandals. That is why, decoration of pandals, art of idols, and cultural programs add more grandeur and colorfulness to this festival.
The Subho Durga Puja idols are especially very artistic and elaborate. These idols are made by those artists after months of rigorous work. The idols of the Goddess Durga, in the different pandals, are beautifully decorated with clothes, jewelry, and other materials. Artists have produced this art for thousands of years and it has also been their traditional profession. This art is immensely popular in West Bengal and the works of these artists keep the viewers spell-bound during Durga Puja.
