Navpatrika Puja, also known as Maha Saptami, finds special celebration on the Saptami Tithi of Navratri. The festival is mainly observed with pomp in states like Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Manipur and Assam. This festival is the first day of worship of Goddess Durga and has special significance in Hinduism. In this puja, Goddess Durga is invited in a group of nine plants, called Navpatrika.
This year, the Navpatrika Puja would be on October 10, 2024. According to Panchang, Saptami Tithi will start from 12:14 pm IST on October 09, 2024, and will last until 12:31 pm IST on October 10, 2024. Brahma Muhurta is at 05:55 am and the sunrise is at 06:19 am.
This puja is focused on the worship of nine different forms of Goddess Durga, comprising different plants like bananas, turmeric, pomegranate, and paddy. This puja expresses devotion and dedication towards Goddess Durga. The gathering and praying of plants involved in Navpatrika symbolizes nine forms of Maa Durga.
Navpatrika is prepared by tying nine different plants together to form a bundle. It also contains a branch of the Bilva tree. The Navpatrika is dressed with a red or orange colored cloth and bathed in a water body like a river. After bath, the Navpatrika is kept on a wooden stand on the right-hand side of the picture of Goddess Durga.
Mahasnan starts the Navpatrika Puja. For Mahasnan, a mirror is fixed in a way that such a reflection of Goddess Durga can be seen inside it clearly. Then the reflection of Goddess Durga is bathed with various holy materials. And once bathed, then the process of Prana Pratishtha (Prana Pratishtha) takes place in which the idol of Goddess Durga is anointed.
After Prana Pratishtha, Shodashopachar Puja, or Shodashopchar Puja is performed. In this puja, very decorative rituals are performed using sixteen different puja materials. This puja culminates in the offering of Devi Bhog and Aarti.
In West Bengal, Navpatrika Puja is also called Kolabaou Puja. Here, this festival is specifically a part of cultural heritage; it is a tradition to celebrate it with pomp and show.
