James Maddison has honestly admitted about Tottenham’s mentality after the 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

Maddison scored to make it 2-0 in the first half after Brennan Johnson had given Tottenham the lead.

However, Tottenham remarkably lost 3-2 as Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck scored for Brighton.

The defeat ended Tottenham’s impressive run of five consecutive wins in all competitions.

Maddison was concerned about the way Tottenham capitulated.

Asked whether Tottenham might have gotten carried away with their first-half performance, Maddison told Sky Sports: “Yes, they definitely could have.

‘Brighton has a good team and has good players. But in the face of adversity in the Premier League you have to stay strong, you have to weather the storm a little bit.

“The best teams at that point stay strong and weather the storm. We certainly didn’t do that.’

Maddison added that Tottenham could not cope with the change in momentum during the match.

Although Tottenham were wary of complacency at half-time, they were ultimately defeated.

He said: “We couldn’t handle the momentum shift. When the first goal came in, we lost control of the match.

‘We were poor at handling the momentum and were unable to gain any control over the match. When they came at us it felt like attack after attack. We couldn’t deal with it and they managed to score three goals.

‘We have been doing well, but today it feels like a few steps back. We said the right things to avoid becoming complacent, but words don’t mean anything if you don’t show them.”

Tottenham will have to wait until after the international break to try to bounce back, with their next match at home to West Ham coming on October 19.

Postecoglou’s team is currently in ninth place and has won three matches, drawn one and lost three so far.

The 3-0 away win against Manchester United last weekend was seen as a big step in the right direction for Tottenham.

However, they were unable to build on that and now have to prove their ability to perform consistently.
