Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Alton Meiring has passed away. Former teammate Jethro Lovers Mohlala is demanding justice for the murder.
FORMER MAMELODI SUNDOWNS ALTON MEIRING DIES
As initially reported by iDiski Times, Meiring died on Sunday at the age of 48 in Cape Town. Meiring holds the Premiership Soccer League record of scoring goals for nine different clubs.
“Former Bafana Bafana striker Alton Meiring has sadly passed away. The 48-year-old, who had two caps for Bafana, played for several clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Jomo Cosmos, Golden Arrows and Manning Rangers. We, at iDiski Times, would like to express our condolences to Meiring’s family and friends,” the report added.
Meiring scored for AmaZulu, Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows, Cape Town Spurs, Manning Rangers, Sundowns, Jomo Cosmos, Mother City and Platinum Stars – as confirmed by Opta Jabu.
STABBED TO DEATH
Speaking to Thabiso Mosia on Radio 2000, Meiring’s brother, Alton, confirmed that the former Sundowns striker was stabbed by a tenant at one of his rented properties.
“Alton was renting out rooms, and some people who were staying there were being helped by Alton. On his way to church, he stopped to drop off something.
“One of the tenants opened the door and just stabbed him till he died.
“What’s shocking here is that we know the person who killed him. He has handed himself over to the police and is now in custody. This is one of the people that Alton helped a lot. He was even staying there for free,” Shane concluded.

“Alton was a very kind and sweet person, and I just don’t understand how someone can want to kill Alton,” Mohlala told Sunday World.
“Alton never argued with anyone. Even on the field, he would never complain. I want to say that it was not his time to die because I know him.
“We met at the SA Under-20, and we became friends. Last week, we added him to a WhatsApp group of Sundowns legends, and today he is gone.”
The former Kabo Yellow left-back continued: “I hear that the person who killed him is a foreign national who does not have proper documents to be in the country.
“The police must do their job and take him to task; justice must be served. I feel sorry for Alton and his family.
“This country is no longer safe to live in, and the level of crime is appalling. People are victims of crime every day, and the cases are not solved.
“The politicians are the only people who are safe in South Africa,” the former Sundowns defender concluded.
