Trail near Fillmore reopens after significant improvements

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A trail in northeast Colorado Springs has reopened after significant improvements were made thanks to the Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) tax.

A ribbon cutting was held at the Rock Island Trail at Legacy Loop on Wednesday, Oct. 2, to celebrate improvements made to the final segment of the trail, including more than 1.25 miles of widened concrete, new fencing, as well as a retaining wall, and right of way improvements.

According to the City of Colorado Springs, the completed segment now provides safe, accessible off-street routes for all trail users including walkers, runners, and cyclists. The completion of this section provides a connection from the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail to the west to Shooks Run Trail and Templeton Gap Road, completing the north segment of the Legacy Loop.

The work was funded thanks to grants from the Land Water Conservation and Colorado the Beautiful as well as from the TOPS sales tax program, with a total investment of $3.12 million. The TOPS tax is a 0.1% sales and use tax that collects 1 penny for every ten dollars of eligible purchases in the City of Colorado Springs for Trails, Open Space, and Parks.
