Americans to get one time payment up to $5k from $4.76m data settlement – not just a receipt is needed to get cash

AMERICANS can grab huge one time payments up to $5,000 following a £4.76 million data breach settlement and all you need to show is a receipt.

Customers of insurance company Group 1001 can claim the generous payments after a data breach that failed to protect customers.

To receive a payment from the settlement, you must submit a claim on or before November 14, 2024.

This settlement benefits Group 1001’s customers, employees, dependants, payees and anyone whose personal information may have been compromised.

Lawsuit plaintiffs claim that Group 1001 failed to protect them from a data breach in February 2023 that may have exposed sensitive data.

The customers argue the data breach was preventable if the firm had put some good cybersecurity measures in place.

The insurance company has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to pay a whopping $4.76 million to resolve the lawsuit, reports Top Class Actions.

Under settlement terms, members can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for any data breach-related losses.

These include bank fees, communication charges, travel expenses, credit costs and up to four hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour.

Class members have the chance to claim a pro rata cash payment instead of this reimbursement if they’d prefer.

These will be $5 at the very least but exact amounts depend on the number of valid claims filed.

Class members can also get three years of free credit monitoring as well as identity theft protection services.

The services offer benefits like $1 million in identity theft insurance.

To claim the cash, you’ll need to provide things documenting data breach-related losses, including but not limited to bills, receipts, and credit reports.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is September 10 and the settlement’s final approval hearing is scheduled for October 3.

To receive Group 1001 settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 10, 2024.

It comes as a massive tech company has agreed to settle data breach claims.

Acrisure, a financial technology and insurance brokerage company, agreed to resolve claims it failed to protect consumer data during a breach in 2022.

While Acrisure has not admitted to any wrongdoing, the company agreed to settle for an undisclosed amount.

The lawsuit alleges that Acrisure did not implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that ended up stealing consumer information.

Claims were made that the data breach compromised sensitive information that left them open to financial loss.

The settlement offers $4,000 to those whose personal information was taken from the December 2022 data breach.
