Appalachian State Field Hockey Defeats Bellarmine in Davidson

The App State field hockey team remained unbeaten in MAC play by defeating the Bellarmine Knights 3-0 on Monday in a game relocated to Davidson’s Belk Turf Field.

The Mountaineers (6-3, 3-0 MAC) never trailed, with Bridget Donovan, Franziska Heyltjes and Frederique Grimbergen finding the back of the cage.

The App State defense was on point, holding Bellarmine (2-7, 0-3 MAC) without a shot in the 60 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Claire Grenis earned her fourth shutout on the season, making her first in the MAC in shutouts.

The game originally was scheduled to be played Friday in Boone, but the date and location were changed due to the impacts from Hurricane Helene.

In the first period, the Mountaineers dominated the bulk of the offensive possession, tallying eight shots in the period to Bellarmine’s zero. Both teams ended the period scoreless, as App State forced four saves from Bellarmine goalkeeper Kailey Workman.

In the second period, the Mountaineers again dominated possession, but neither team found the back of the cage. App State finished the half with five corners and five shots on goal to Bellarmine’s zero.

App State controlled the pace, eventually leading to a Donovan goal at the end of the third period to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers found the back of the cage twice in the final frame, first coming from Heyltjes, a freshman who scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Grimbergen scored the final goal for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to travel to Ohio to face off against Kent State on Friday. First touch is slated for 2 p.m.
