As Nigeria celebrates her 64th independence anniversary, a renowned basketball promoter and initiator of the Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, Igoche Mark, has emphasised the crucial role sports has played in shaping the country’s image since 1960.
In 64 years, Nigeria has won many laurels at international competitions like the Olympic Games, African Games, Commonwealth Games and other continental sporting events.
For instance, Nigeria was the first African country to win the football event at the Summer Olympics Games in 1996.
The U-17 boys national team also called the Golden Eaglets are the most successful team in the FIFA World Championship having won five titles.
Therefore, Mark has urged the federal government to prioritise sports, recognizing its potential beyond mere recreation to a viable business and career opportunity.
He said the numerous accomplishments of Nigeria athletes who showcase the country’s potential on the global stage are enough reasons to give sports its due.
“Sports has been Nigeria’s major image marker since independence. Investing in sports and supporting athletes can enhance our reputation and create opportunities for the youths,” said Mark.
On his part, Mark with his unwavering dedication to basketball, he hopes to inspire others to champion sports development in Nigeria.
The basketball promoter, therefore, called on other well-meaning Nigerians to support the government in developing the sports sector.
