Police: Pharmacy robbery suspect did not die after jumping off bridge while fleeing police

Multiple suspects who used a chainsaw to rob a pharmacy were thought to have jumped off a bridge after being pursued by the police — leaving one of them dead — but a later update from officials indicates that no one jumped or died.

According to initial reporting from the Los Angeles Police Department, Harbor Division officers responded to a burglary in progress call in the 200 block of East Anaheim Street in Wilmington at 4:20 a.m. Monday.

In a statement issued later Monday morning, LAPD stated that an hour before the burglary call, one of the suspects had carjacked a vehicle with a person inside in the 1200 block of West 8th Street.

The passenger was released shortly after the car was taken, and it was this vehicle that was used in the burglary in Wilmington, police said.

When officers arrived at the scene of the burglary, they saw “approximately 11” suspects enter the vehicle, leading them to initiate a pursuit.

The chase terminated in the area of Pier T in Long Beach, where all suspects fled from the vehicle. A total of six were in custody as of 10:45 a.m., LAPD said in their update.

It is unclear how police came to believe the suspects had jumped off the bridge or that one had died. Why that information was relayed to KTLA is also not know.

Both lanes of the International Gateway Bridge were shut down during the investigation into the pursuit termination. A SigAlert lasting an unknown duration has been issued.

KTLA photojournalist Chris Gierowski contributed to this report.
