The visitors got off to a flying start, going ahead after just three minutes as Micky van de Ven charged through the Red Devils team and put it on a plate for Brennan Johnson to score.
Tottenham then began to dominate, creating chances for fun but failing to take them.
Things then went from bad to worse for United as Bruno Fernandes was controversially sent off for a high lunge on James Maddison.
The skipper appeared to slip before making the tackle – but the decision was not overturned by VAR.
After the break, Spurs made it 2-0 via a Dejan Kulusevksi strike.
United tried to fight back, only for Dominic Solanke to tap home from close range.
