GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The North Carolina Division of Transportation is urging people to reconsider any travel to western North Carolina.
The NCDOT released a statement on Saturday that western North Carolina should be considered closed to unnecessary travel due to the lengthy recovery efforts. Around 390 roads and dozens of highways remain closed because of flooding, downed trees, landslides and other damage from Hurricane Helene.
“Our top priority is everyone’s safety and well-being,” said state Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins. “People should still consider roads in western North Carolina to be closed and avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary. Priority must be given to all the emergency responders, utility and transportation crews, and others who are working hard to help with what will be a lengthy response and recovery effort.”
More than 1,600 people are working to repair roadways, though the department reports that efforts may take months as the damage is serious.
