Durga Navami or Mahanavami is the day when this great observance is dedicated to the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri that will fall on Saturday, October 12 in the year 2024. On the last day of the Sharadiya Navratri Goddess Durga appears in the form of Mahishasuramardini, which means the slayer of Mahishasura, a buffalo-like demon, whom Goddess Durga destroyes.

Major dates of the four-day Durga Puja are Saptami that is, 10th October 2024, Ashtami, that is, 11th of October 2024, Navami, that is, 12th of October 2024, and Dashami, that is, 13th of October 2024.
Durga Puja begins with Maha Snan and Shodashopachara Puja on Mahanavami. The principal rite of the puja of this day is ‘Navami Homa’, which is performed at the end of Navami Puja. In fact, Navami Homa takes as much importance as any of the other rituals of Durga Puja.
Devotees worship Goddess Durga in the form of Mahishasuramardini on Navami, form in which she killed Mahishasura on the ninth day of battle. The day is said to be especially important for the sacrifices offered and auspicious, if done during ‘afternoon’ time.
