A driver’s license for a California adult is good for five years. About two months before it expires, the Department of Motor Vehicles sends a notice with renewal instructions. Here are the most common scenarios:
No office visit required. A driver under 70 years old who has done an in-person renewal within the past 10 years may qualify to renew online, by phone, by mail or at a DMV kiosk with a $45 payment. This isn’t an option if there are certain red flags on your record.
In-person renewal, no test required. If you renewed without an office visit the previous two times, you’ll probably be instructed to come in for a new photo, thumbprint and vision test.
In-person renewal, knowledge test required. The DMV can require the test because of a number of factors, including a driver’s record or age or if their license has been expired for more than 60 days. The agency encourages drivers to start the renewal process online, and in most cases the test can been taken online, too, but the office visit will still be required.
In-person renewal, driving test required. It’s uncommon for the DMV to require a behind-the-wheel test of an adult with an existing license, but it’s a possibility if they determine there’s reason to doubt your driving ability.
How are the rules different for drivers 70 and up?
A driver older than 70 must take the knowledge test and do an in-person renewal every five years. The knowledge test (or the alternative video course) can be taken online, but the office visit is still mandatory.
If I renew online, will I get a new license card?
Yes. It usually arrives within three weeks, though the DMV says to allow 60 days. It will be the same as your previous one — including the same photo — but with the new expiration date.
So I can’t change my weight or my hair color?
Changing your physical description requires an office visit.
What if I want to get a new picture?
If you’re doing your renewal, there won’t be an extra fee for going into a DMV office for a photo. If your license isn’t expiring and you still want a new picture, you’ll need to pay the $36 fee for a duplicate license.
Can I submit my documents for a REAL ID while I’m doing my online renewal?
You can upload the identification and residency documents, but you’ll still need to make an office visit if you’re a first-time REAL ID applicant.
