Suspects get away following East Bay burglary, police pursuit

LAFAYETTE — More than one person suspected in the burglary of a downtown business got away despite a pursuit from officers on the ground and in the air, authorities said.

Lafayette police officers were called about 4:45 p.m. Tuesday for an initial report of a robbery at the business in the 3500 block of Mount Diablo Boulevard, according to a statement from Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jimmy Lee. The Lafayette Police Dept. contracts with the sheriff’s office.

According to Lee, investigators later determined the incident to be a burglary. The suspects fled the crime scene in a vehicle, Lee said.

A Lafayette police officer spotted the vehicle going west on state Highway 24 and pursued it for a bit until pulling back because of what Lee said was reckless driving by one of the suspects.

A STARR 1 helicopter from the sheriff’s office later located the same vehicle in Oakland and saw the suspects run into an apartment complex in the 1000 block of 7th Street, Lee said.

Oakland police and officers from the California Highway Patrol surrounded the area but were unable to catch the suspects, Lee said. They did recover the vehicle along with stolen property.
