82-year-old Santa Cruz County pedestrian killed in e-bike crash

SANTA CRUZ — An 82-year-old woman was killed after coming into contact with an electric bike driven by an 80-year-old man Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz office wrote on its Facebook page.

According to the CHP, the man was riding a white Aventon Pace 500 on the right shoulder of Opal Cliffs Drive at an undetermined rate of speed when he crashed into a woman walking east of the cyclist near Court Drive. Officers responded to the incident at 5:50 a.m. The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Valley Medical Center where she later died. The cyclist also sustained injuries and was transported by ground to Dominican Hospital. The post did identify the victim.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP, and drugs and alcohol are not being considered factors at this time.

The post recommended that pedestrians and cyclists wear reflective materials or carry lights when traveling while it is dark out.
