The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has renewed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Lagos on the use of its N.6bn metallurgical laboratory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja.
The MoU initially signed in July 2018 by the then leadership of the bureau when it was still Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) was renewed by the Director General, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr, and the vice chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.
Daily Trust reports that the bureau had invested over N600m in the laboratory equipment used in analysing accident reports but it has been dormant for over a decade after it was acquired.
The bureau however wrote to Department of Material and Metallurgical Engineering in several universities for the purpose of making some of the equipment available for research and innovations.

An MoU was then signed with the University of Lagos which entailed relocation of some of the equipment for the use of the university and other institutions around for research purposes by students and lecturers.
Due to some logistics, the equipment had not been moved since the MoU was signed while the leadership of NSIB under Badeh renewed the pact yesterday.
During the MoU signing ceremony at the Unilag Senate Building, the NSIB DG stated that the bureau would fast-track the relocation of some of the equipment in the laboratory for the use of the institution.
He stated that the initial agreement was not followed up due to some logistics reasons, disclosing that on the assumption of office, he met the MoU on the ground which required renewal.
He clarified that the bureau is not relocating the entire laboratory but some of the equipment which the university would require to conduct research.
Earlier the vice chancellor of the university said the equipment would help the university in carrying out its mandate of teaching and research.
She said both Unilag and NSIB are desirous of moving the MoU forward in a collaborative engagement that would help both organisations and the country in general.
