One man was killed and six others hospitalized during a hazardous materials incident at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday morning.
The incident was reported at 8:40 a.m., and the Los Angeles Fire Department found seven people ranging in age from 18 to 35 at the scene, according to LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart.
A man, 35, was in critical condition upon the responders’ arrival and was declared dead at the scene.
The six others were taken to local hospitals in mild distress.
A hazardous materials team is decontaminating the area, in which an unknown white powder was found.
